Campillos

Campillos is a rural community located at the northwest of the province of Malaga, in the region of Guadalteba and in the administrative area of Antequera.

Its municipal area is 188 square kilometres that goes along the cereal and olive fields, with some lagoons where flamingos and storks are to be found. According to INEs 2012 records, the population was 8.663 citizens.

Campillos was established in 1492 with the approval of the Catholic Kings. King Charles II of Spain gave Campillos the benefit of villazgo with full jurisdiction, exempting it from Teba (depending administratively up to then) and was named head of administrative area in 1821.

The town centre is a combination of stately houses and contemporary buildings recently constructed, being the church of Nuestra Señora del Reposo (patron of the village) the main monument, built during the 16th century (1506) but with several alterations during the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century, leaving it as we now know it today. Its main baroque facade is considered one of the most beautiful in the entire region. The chapel of San Benito (patron of the village) and San Sebastian are also worth visiting. There are some primitive population ruins, and some Roman and Islamic ruins.
